Transforming Concepts into Real-world Prototypes

What Does transforming concepts into real-world prototype?

Mr. Vichhai CHHOEURM has been with VP.Start for 10 years, leading the Hardware Engineering team in developing technology solutions at the VP.Start Sen Sok Valley Campus Research and Development Center. These innovations and technologies are the achievements of Cambodian engineers working at VP.Start, with one clear mission: “Made in Cambodia, made for the world.”

He stated:

“Every technology solution we create is based on real existing problems, not on following temporary trends (On-trend). Instead, our development process is problem-based. For example, with DRC IoT Devices, we collect real data from electrical grid operators and address challenges such as workplace safety risks, delays in power supply management, power outages, electricity theft, and damaged electrical equipment without maintenance notification technologies.”

To ensure the effectiveness of technology solution development, engineers must have a long-term vision for the next 10 to 20 years of practical use. At the same time, these technologies must be developed to fit the actual conditions of the electrical network and society.

In Cambodia, for example, the country currently utilizes a fast 4G network with approximately 90% nationwide coverage. Compared to newer technologies such as 5G and 6G, which are not yet fully operational or practical within Cambodia’s context, 4G remains more suitable for current implementation.

Each technology solution is developed through a combination of Hardware and Software designed in an environmentally friendly and user-safe manner, ensuring durability and intelligence. These solutions help simplify complexities that previously existed.

Today, operators can manage the electrical network remotely from home through the PLUM mobile network management application on smartphones or through intelligent systems inside the Control Room, without the need to physically visit sites as before. These advancements demonstrate that VP.Start’s technology solutions are designed for operators at every level to use and control easily, while also being simple to install.

Mr. Vichhai further emphasized that every technology solution deployed in local or international markets is developed according to globally recognized standards, such as IEC standards used in the DRC-001 smart device, along with many additional standards planned for future Smart Grid IoT Devices.

The principle he always follows is:c

“Start today for the future generations.”

He believes that the journey of previous generations creates a strong path for younger generations to follow toward a brighter future.

He also encouraged students who are currently studying or have recently graduated not to lose hope. Although Cambodia may still be behind in technology and economic development, he believes Cambodia can compete globally in innovation.

Practical experience is essential. Activities such as internships and volunteer work in technology companies allow students to understand the real working world beyond classroom theories. Engaging in real society, facing real challenges, and finding real solutions are what help individuals grow beyond their comfort zones.
